We recognize that we need to move more for our health, but the thought of wandering into a gym or going for a run stops us in our tracks. So, what is our best course of action?<\/p>\n<h2>Is physical activity the same as exercise?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardio.com\/blog\/what-is-the-difference-between-physical-activity-and-exercise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Physical activity and exercise are not the same things<\/a>. Exercise is a planned movement that improves your fitness and health, whereas physical activity is any movement that a person does.<\/p>\n<h3>Examples of exercise:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Walking<\/li>\n<li>Stretching<\/li>\n<li>Golf<\/li>\n<li>Frisbee<\/li>\n<li>Soccer<\/li>\n<li>Swimming<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Examples of physical activity:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Taking the stairs to your destination<\/li>\n<li>Putting your dishes away, one at a time<\/li>\n<li>Vacuuming your entire home<\/li>\n<li>Redecorating<\/li>\n<li>Carrying in your groceries<\/li>\n<li>Biking to go on your errands<\/li>\n<li>Gardening<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both types of movement can be beneficial to your health. In fact, in many of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/blue-zones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blue zones<\/a>\u201d of the world, much of the physical fitness that these long-lived people achieve comes from their daily tasks, such as taking care of farm animals instead of spending hours at the gym.<\/p>\n<h2>What is physical fitness?<\/h2>\n<p>According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/physical%20fitness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">physical fitness<\/a> is \u201cgood health and strength achieved through exercise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That being said, you can be in great shape simply by doing regular amounts of physical activity, such as taking care of a garden. You don\u2019t have to invest in a personal trainer to feel your very best!<\/p>\n<h2>What are the benefits of physical activity?<\/h2>\n<p>When you put an emphasis on moving more in your day, you will achieve several benefits, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More energy overall<\/li>\n<li>Increasing your daily step count<\/li>\n<li>Exercising your heart rate<\/li>\n<li>Reducing sedentary and sitting time<\/li>\n<li>Giving you a sense of accomplishment<\/li>\n<li>Building functional strength<\/li>\n<li>Promoting better health<\/li>\n<li>Adding a sense of enjoyment in life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Incorporating stretching into your physical activities<\/h2>\n<p>Whether you are just getting more active at home or spending time at the gym, <a href=\"https:\/\/westretch.ca\/blog\/how-exactly-does-stretching-ease-pain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stretching is essential to keep your body moving without injury<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before you engage in any sort of strenuous activity, be sure to do at least about 5-10 minutes of warm-up stretching, which is typically more active stretches, with short holds. This helps to prevent injuries and to perform your best right from the start.<\/p>\n<p>It is also a great idea to do some longer-held cool-down stretches after serious activity, be it household labour or an intense sport. This promotes good circulation that allows your body to recover more efficiently.<\/p>\n<h2>Breaking down how to increase your physical activity and movement in a day.<\/h2>\n<p>It is recommended to get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/fitness\/fitness-basics\/aha-recs-for-physical-activity-in-adults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at least 150 minutes of regular physical activity in a week<\/a>. While this may seem daunting, it is roughly only about 20 minutes a day, and you don\u2019t have to do it all at once. Try incorporating these tips to get your body moving!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you use public transit, try getting off one stop earlier and walking a little bit further.<\/li>\n<li>Do a 10-minute stretching routine as a mental reset in the middle of the day.<\/li>\n<li>Set aside time to vacuum and mop the floors at least once a week. (This also helps to keep your house cleaner!)<\/li>\n<li>Take movement breaks when you sit down, where every hour you get up and move around for 1-5 minutes before getting back to work.<\/li>\n<li>Add a desk pedaller or exercise ball to your work set-up or while you&#8217;re watching tv.<\/li>\n<li>If you have small kids running around, play a game of tag with them.<\/li>\n<li>Take more than one trip to carry your groceries into your house.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.steinway.com\/news\/features\/the-benefits-of-playing-piano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Play an instrument<\/a> or start singing. (Even if you\u2019re sitting down, your body is moving, you\u2019re refining your motor skills, and you\u2019re working your brain!)<\/li>\n<li>Enjoy a game of twister with your loved ones!<\/li>\n<li>Visit a museum, art gallery, or another type of event.<\/li>\n<li>Have a mini dance party- either on its own or while you clean!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let us know what your top tips are to get more movement in your day.
